Class Prophecy In The Year 1957
I, Sylvia Harlow Garner and new husband, Jim Garner, an executive on Wall Street, recently returned from Paris. We were met by the famous author Leroy Davis and his new wife Lois Conway Davis, an actress who starred in "The New Girl In Town". We registered at Heartbreak Hotel and there we saw the singing rage, George Shore, the second Elvis Presley. We were ushered to our table by our old friend and classmate Dennis Black. After we had eaten, we went to Madison Square Garden to see our pal, Cheryl Hunter, battle for the title of Lightweight Boxing Champ. The next day we went to the Ringling Bros. Circus and watched Kenneth Caskey, the Great Trapeze Artist perform. Since I wanted some new clothes, we went to madame Lois Davidson's Fashion Center and saw our old chum Donna Unger, modeling clothes. After we chatted a bit, we went on to the Metropolitan Opera House, where we saw, much to our surprise, Anne Taton Clem and her husband, Joe Clem, singing a duet. As soon as we had left, we were suddenly stopped by a young woman who looked like one of our former classmates. As she stopped us, recognition came to us at last. Beth Ann Willet was trying to sell us baby bottles which were made and designed by our great friends, Sharon, a scientist, and David Collins, the famous designer of baby bottles. Naturally we were astonished at this strange turn of events. The last time we had heard from our home town, Satanta, Kansas, Phyllis Turley, a glorified clock watcher, had been engaged to Gary Harlow, a preacher of the Methodist Church. We naturally had good reasons to be astonished. We soon decided to drive all the way to Satanta, Kansas and as we drove along we came to a road under construction. We saw a bulldozer moving along and pal Ella Mae Jones was driving it. We arrived at Satanta at 2:30 P.M. and drove to the drugstore. As we gave our orders a solemn doctor and his nurse came in after a case. Imagine our surprise when we saw John Bush and Kay Moody. As they stopped to chat for a minute, John's childhood pal, Dane Selby joined us. When we inquired about Dane's occupation he replied, "Oh I'm a weight lifter in the Selby Circus". We then asked about Dane's cousin, David Selby. We soon learned that he was a Lion-Tamer in the Selby Circus. When we finally went to pay for our cokes, our surprise was complete when we saw the soda jerk, Dale Stephens. As we were paying him a handsome couple walked in, Bertha Stapp Griffen and her husband Sonny Griffen, a mathematics teacher in the local high school. When we left, we then went to the high school auditorium to see the Ballet Presented by the Ballet Dancing School of Garden City. We went back stage to talk with the teacher, Mary Reimer and we also met her star pupil, Tom Long. After we had talked over old times for a while, we were introduced to the principal David Dickey and his competent secretary, Beverly Callis. Soon after this, my husband received a telephone call from Paris requesting his presence immediately, so we caught the next flight across the Atlantic. We immediately recognized the old bald headed pilot as our old instructor, Mr. Harkrader.
